Maths Project The nursery school, along with five other Cambridgeshire Nursery Schools are currently involved in a very intersting project as part of a primary strategy learning network. The network is focussing on early years maths with an aim of “Raising the quality of learning and teaching within the area of written calculations”. Play activities in the nursery will form an important base for future work in written calculations. At a practical level this means that we will continue to offer a mathematically rich environment, which children can access independently throughout the session through meaningful and real experiences. An important part of the project is practitioners `modelling` mathematical recording in real life situations (e.g. recording the number of children at snack time) and observing children´s own recording through mark-making. Parents and carer's involvement in the project is very important. We will be using ICT to support children´s learning e.g. using programmable toys and digital cameras. A website is being developed of good practice in maths can be shared with staff in the other nursery schools and later used for training purposes more widely.
